The new Volkswagen Passat is a head turner from the German auto giant due to its incredibly classy and understated styling.
The new VW Passat has finally arrived in India after a long time, after its world premiere. The last generation of Passat was discontinued in the country during late 2013. Passat is the first front engine successful car of Volkswagen. Over the years, it has changed from a basic family car to something more premium in its category. This is the eighth generation of Passat that Volkswagen has developed and the change has been significant and customers have appreciated it in everysense. The saloon version of Passat helped to create a presence in China. The first generat5ion of Passat was quiet radical for its first time, because VW was known for its car with engines in the rear. Changes that VW brought to Passat over the years definitely took it quiet further in the race. The biggest change that came in Passat was in the seventh generation, a substantial decrease in CO2 emission and blue motion technology was introduced across the range. Eighth generation of Passat was unveiled in 2014 at Germany when Volkswagen was acknowledging the diesel emissions scandal, which was one of the worst in the history of the automaker, Passat was globally launched at that critical time.
Volkswagen developed a design line referred as MQB (Modular Querbaukasten) translated to Modular Transversal Matrix). Passat is based on the same design line and it is the second car which has been launched on this platform by Volkswagen in India after VW Tiguan. This platform has been designed to reduce the manufacturing cost by using modular structure across several Volkswagen group cars. The engine drivetrain, chassis component and other vendors can be used among different models and body styles. This type of structure helps in sharing of parts at much higher degree and the same vendor can supply parts different models. The Audi A3, Skoda Octavia, Superb, Kodiaq are based on this platform.
The Passat has been introduced with numerous ADAS (Advanced driver-assistance systems). There is the support given to the vehicle through electronic systems that help the driver while driving. These systems are designed with a safe machine-human interface which intend to increase the safety of the car as well as safety on the road. It is equipped with high quality features. Emergency driver assistant which takes control automatically, in case of emergency with the driver. Collision avoidance system designed to prevent the seriousness of the collision. Semi-automatic parking system which is an autonomous maneuvering system that helps in parking of the vehicle. Variable ratio system is a feature introduced as ‘progressive steering’ which adjusts the steering gear ratios in relation to the speed of the vehicle.
The Volkswagen Passat is offered with one engine of diesel. The engine is 1988cc, mated with a DSG transmission. The ARAI certified mileage is 17.42 kmph. The power offered by the engine is 175bhp@3600-4000 rpm and maximum torque offered is 350 bhp@1500-3500 rpm. It has a seating capacity of five people. Boot space is massive with 586 litres. The fuel tank has a capacity of 66 litres.
The Passat is assembled in India at Volkswagen’s Aurangabad facility and comes in two variants; comfortline and highline. It is priced at Rs.29.99 lacs and Rs.32.99 lacs (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively.
