Hyundai with its Kona has signalled the beginning of a new era for Indian auto Industry. Lately, there has been too much hype in the air of automotive industry regarding Electric adoption as new power house for the future vehicles. Several policies have been made by the Government for faster adoption of electric mobility. Billions have been spent on the R&D. Dozens of the prototypes have been made and results are taking final shapes. EVs have been neglected due to their range deficiency. Hyundai has provided a range of 400 km on single charge that will beat the range anxiety of customers in India who will face the lack of charging infrastructure for some time in near future. Hyundai has provided two chargers a portable one and AC wall Box charger to its customers along with the vehicle. The introductory price of Kona is Rs.25-30 Lakh(ex-showroom India). Technically, Kona is not India’s first electric vehicle. Mahindra’s EO, Everito and Tata were in the race but they lacked the stamina for the extramile.
Kona – India’s first electric vehicle
Kona is India’s first electric vehicle to have range above 400 kms and multiple charging options. In India, Hyundai has offered Kona with a battery of 39.2 KWH, which has an ARAI claimed range of 452km and it comes with a warranty of 8-years or 1,60,000 km. Hyundai will sell it in a single variant in just 11 cities through its 15 dealerships for now. If the vehicle is charged with its AC charging station which comes with the package, it will take around 6 hours for the vehicle to charge completely. The AC charger is a 7.2 KW wall box charging station which can be connected to any 15-ampere socket. If the 50KW DC fast charger is used, the Kona will charge to its 80 percent battery strength in less than an hour. The portable charger is 2.8 KW normal wall socket charger that will take 19 hours to completely juice up the battery. Hyundai is offering 24×7 emergency roadside assistance to support the vehicle with charging.
Hyundai Kona Motor
The electric motor installed in Kona delivers 136 PS and 395NM of torque. The motor is engaged with a shift-by-wire automatic transmission. The motor is being powered by a 39.2 KWH lithium-ion polymer battery with liquid cooling technology. Paddle shifters has been provided for adjustable regenerative braking. The Kona comes with Eco+, Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes and has a capability of making 0-100kmph in just 9.7 seconds. Hyundai chose a permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor to power the vehicle.
The Kona Electric has a unique front grille with an integrated charging port. There are bi-function LED headlamps with LED DRLs. Rear tail lamps is LED. 17-inch alloy wheels add to the strong appearance with the roof rails and rear spoilers.
The Kona electric has a class apart cabin with leather seats, leather wrapped steering wheel has multi-function control with audio & Bluetooth. The full digital instrument cluster adds to the refined look and the 17.77 cm touchscreen infotainment is compatible with Android Auto and Apple car play. Electric sunroof, front ventilated and heated seat add to the luxury quotient. Fully automatic temperature control (FATC) electric parking brake with auto hold and 10-way power driver seat with lumbar support. Kona gets 6 airbags, ESC, VSM, rear camera for parking assist and ISUFIX anchors among safety features.
