Iconic stays relevant, only if it innovates. In changing times and a changing market, adapting with technologies becomes a corner stone.Harley Davidson, one of the most iconic brands in the world of motorcycles, did something similarly radical and unveiled its first electric power terrain motorcycle, LiveWire.
First unveiled to the media in 2014 as a concept, the model has now entered production and delivery to customers will begin in August 2019 in US, Canada and major European markets under select dealerships, with availability expanding to global markets in 2020 and 2021.
Priced at $29999, the electric bike, Livewire by no means a timid machine. It has the signature design elements of the Harley Davidson legacy. The motor is placed below the battery along the long axis which powers the motorcycle with 105 horsepower. The battery is also fairly large at 15.5 kWh.
Harley Davidson calls the drive terrain ‘Revelation’ which feature a belt drive.
With this, the motorcycle has a range of 235 km(146 miles) in city range with full charge. Capable of going 0-100 in just 3 seconds and a top speed of 177 kmph, Livewire is fairly fast and packs a lot of power.
The bike comes with the feature of Level 3 DC fast charging that would top up the battery from 0 to 80% in 40 minutes and will give a full charge in 60 minutes. There is also an option for Level 1 charging that can be charged at 10-11 hours overnight.
The motor and the controller have liquid cooling systems, while the battery is air cooled. There is an dedicated air intake just below the faux tank that forces air past the battery’s cooling fins.
While the Livewire is a radical departure from the company’s 111 year old legacy, it still has few features that will remind rider of the good old times. Like the sound system, where the bike sound just like the signature HD way when accelerated.
That said, the bike comes with smart capabilities and makes the use of company’s H-D connect technology. This connects the rider with the LiveWire through the phone. The app provides information like turn-by-turn direction, ride planning, remote motorcycle systems monitoring, charge monitoring etc. The app also gives information on vehicle health and tracking facility.
Apart from the smart technology, there are high performance parts like the Brembo Monoblock brakes and adjustable show suspension. Traction control, anti-lock braking system, anti-wheelie control, cornering enhanced control system, reflex defensive rider system and multiple riding mode choice gives the rider a true sense of control and safety.
While the company has adopted the new guard, the genes of design and philosophy are still intact. Where the motor is pretty much visible and prominent like the other bikes from the company. In 2015 the bike in the Movie ‘Avengers Age of Ultron’ to garner the views of the general and unbiased audience. It sure that Harley Davidson is working to create the new kind of icon and cater to a wider and new market.
